Uganda's premier Arabica origin, cultivated at 1,300-2,300m on the volcanic slopes of an ancient shield volcano. Home to the renowned Bugisu AA and specialty SL varieties.
The Mt Elgon region is the beating heart of Uganda's Arabica coffee sector, producing approximately two-thirds of the country's total Arabica output.
Mount Elgon is an extinct shield volcano straddling the Uganda-Kenya border, with its western and southern slopes forming Uganda's most celebrated coffee landscape. Arabica coffee here is cultivated at elevations ranging from 1,300 to 2,300 meters above sea level, where cool temperatures slow cherry maturation and concentrate sugars and acids for exceptional cup complexity.
The region's volcanic soils are the foundation of its quality. Rich in minerals and organic matter, these well-draining loams give Mt Elgon Arabica its characteristic body and depth. Annual production across the zone reaches approximately 1.2 million 60-kg bags, placing Mt Elgon among East Africa's most significant Arabica origins.
Coffee growing is concentrated in four primary districts: Bugisu (the traditional heartland), Bukwo on the northeastern slopes, Kapchorwa at the highest elevations, and Sironko in the fertile central belt. Across these districts, over 200,000 smallholder farming families cultivate coffee on plots averaging 0.5 to 2 hectares, delivering cherry to centralized washing stations operated by cooperatives and private exporters.
The region's bimodal rainfall pattern, with two distinct rainy seasons, supports both a main crop and a secondary fly crop, giving buyers two annual windows to source fresh-crop Mt Elgon Arabica.
Mt Elgon's bimodal rainfall pattern supports two distinct harvest cycles. Understanding the calendar is essential for planning sourcing trips and sample requests.
The main harvest runs from October through February and accounts for roughly 70% of annual production. Cherries harvested during this period benefit from the long rainy season (March to May), which builds soil moisture for extended flowering and cherry development. This is when the highest-quality Bugisu AA and specialty-grade lots reach the market.
The fly crop from May through August provides a smaller but increasingly important secondary harvest. Driven by the short rains of October to December, the fly crop supplies fresh Arabica during a window when many other East African origins are between seasons. Forward-thinking buyers increasingly book fly-crop lots to maintain fresh inventory flow.
Off-season months (March-April and September) are dedicated to processing, milling, grading, and preparing shipments. Washing stations use these periods for maintenance and farmer training programs.
Three distinct variety profiles define the Mt Elgon cup. From winey and full-bodied to bright and citrus-driven, there is a profile for every roaster's menu.
The flagship of Mt Elgon Arabica. Known for its winey acidity, rich chocolate undertones, and a full, syrupy body. Cupping notes often include dark cherry, cocoa, and brown spice. Bugisu AA consistently scores 83-86 points and forms the backbone of Uganda's specialty Arabica exports. Best suited for espresso blends and single-origin dark roasts.
The standout specialty variety, originally developed in Kenya and now thriving on Mt Elgon's volcanic slopes. Delivers vibrant blackcurrant and bright citrus acidity with a clean, medium body. Top lots regularly cup at 85-88 points, drawing comparisons to premium Kenyan offerings. Ideal for light to medium roasts where its complex fruit character shines through filter brewing.
A balanced and versatile variety with a smooth, nutty profile and gentle sweetness. Less acidic than SL28, SL14 offers notes of almond, milk chocolate, and caramel with a round, approachable body. Widely grown by smallholders for its drought tolerance and reliable yields. Performs well across roast levels and works beautifully in blends or as an everyday single origin.
Mt Elgon's coffee moves through a network of cooperatives and private exporters who operate washing stations, manage quality control, and connect farmers to international markets.
Uganda's oldest and largest coffee cooperative, established in 1954. BCU represents over 200 primary societies and processes the majority of Bugisu AA coffee. Their centralized washing stations in Mbale set quality standards for the entire region. BCU is the traditional gateway for buyers seeking certified Bugisu origin Arabica.
A major Ugandan exporter with significant Mt Elgon operations. Kawacom operates multiple washing stations across the region and is known for strong specialty programs including Rainforest Alliance and organic-certified lots. Their direct supply chain offers buyers traceability down to washing-station level.
Part of the Volcafe group, Kyagalanyi is one of Uganda's largest coffee exporters with extensive Mt Elgon sourcing networks. They run farmer training programs focused on agronomy and quality improvement, and offer a wide range of grades from commercial Bugisu to premium micro-lots with full traceability documentation.
A specialty-focused exporter working directly with farmer groups on Mt Elgon's high-altitude slopes. Mountain Harvest specializes in premium SL14 and SL28 micro-lots, often featuring single-producer separations. Their model emphasizes quality premiums paid directly to farmers, making them a preferred partner for roasters building direct-trade relationships.
Processed coffee from Mt Elgon moves through a well-established logistics chain. Green coffee is milled and graded at dry mills in and around Mbale, the region's commercial hub at the foot of the mountain. From Mbale, containerized shipments travel approximately 250 km southwest to Kampala for consolidation, documentation, and export clearance. The journey typically takes 5 to 7 hours by road on the paved Mbale-Jinja-Kampala highway. Kampala's dry ports and ICD (Inland Container Depot) handle stuffing and customs procedures before containers are railed or trucked 1,100 km to the Port of Mombasa in Kenya for ocean freight. Door-to-door transit time from Mbale washing stations to Mombasa port averages 10 to 14 days.
